iPhone 5 wait still preferable to white iPhone 4, say defiant holdouts

The iPhone 5 is worth the wait despite the arrival of the white iPhone 4 and the fact that said arrival means the iPhone 5 going to take longer to arrive than many waiters had expected. But despite our declaration that it’s okay to stop waiting and go ahead and take the white iPhone 4 plunge, some defiant holdouts have spoken very loudly about the reasons that they’ve decided to go ahead and wait for the iPhone 5 after all.
First, there’s the disappointment in the fact that things are playing out as they are:
“I’m sick that they even introduced the [white] iPhone 4 with the iPhone 5 hanging over our Verizon heads.  I’ve waited this long what choice do I have?”
Then of course there’s the (we think) sarcastic take:
“Get an iPhone 4 and upgrade to iOS 5 when it’s release … you’ll only be missing the 8 mp camera, the A5 processor, and the bigger screen honestly, nothing major you know? ”
At least one Beatweek reader is waiting until the iPhone 5 arrives, but may ultimately buy an iPhone 4 at that time:
“All valid points, although, for me a) white/black isn’t an issue, b) not especially concerned about 4G capability either, and c) the reason I skipped the iPhone 4 is not really liking the design; the 3GS is just more comfortable to hold and talk on. I’m waiting to see if I prefer the iPhone 5 design; if so, I’ll get the 5, if not I’ll settle on the 4. But in that circumstance there will be one key advantage to ‘holding out’ – the almost certain price cut on the older model.”
And then there are those still asking the same question they were asking before the white iPhone 4 launch:
“So do I upgrade from my slow 3G to a 4 now? Or keep holding on and wait for the 5…”

AT&T Rep Says No New iPhone 5 In June or July

We’re getting more and more reports all the time which suggest that we wont be seeing the iPhone5 until September. At the moment it looks like it’s set to be revealed at Apple’s music event in September instead of at WWDC.

Now we’ve got an unverified report in from an AT&T Customer Care member representative who says that Apple has officially confirmed with the carrier that there will be no iPhone 5 in June or July, breaking the normal iPhone refresh cycle.

This report came from a reader at Macrumors who was inquiring with AT&T as to why his upgrade was pushed back 5 months.

As part of a response outlining AT&T’s criteria for determining upgrade eligibility dates, the agent reportedly offered the following statement as fact:

Apple has informed us that they do not plan to release the iPhone in the June to July timeframe, though there will be a newer version in the future. Unfortunately, we have not been given a release time for the new phone. We will release this information on our website when it is available to us

Of course we can be rather skeptical of any of these rumors. Generally customer care reps will not have that much information regarding new product launches, but it does tie in with all the other rumors we’ve had to date.

iPhone 5 to come in ‘standard’ and ‘pro’ flavours?

Apple could be set to offer a double whammy of smartphone goodness this year, with news that the Cupertino massive is to launch two versions of the iPhone5.

The iPhone Download Blog is reporting that the new iPhone will come in two variations: standard and pro.

Now the iPhone Download Blog isn’t the first to send rumour and speculation skipping off hand in hand in Apple land, but it seems that this specific piece of information came from an insider who believes that Apple is stocking up on phone components of differing quality.

The components being ordered won’t fit into one iPhone so it is thought that consumers may be able to buy either a budget iPhone or one which has better components inside.

Alternatively, the differing components could be used in the new iPod touch that Apple is rumoured to be working on – which fits better than a complete strategy change from Jobs’ lot.

It is still thought that the iPhone launch will miss its annual June release in favour of a release sometime in September – a date usually kept for the launch of new iPods.

iPhone 5′s Future iOS Being Tested At Apple

iPhone 5 news has been quite dry for the past couple days. The biggest iPhone 5 related news from the past couple days was the fact that people on Twitter were joking around that Obama was going to announce the iPhone 5 and not Osama Bin Laden’s death.

However, here is the closest thing to iPhone 5 news that we could find that will hopefully satisfy you all until some real good news comes out; which is inevitable as September (or even June 2011 for all we know) approaches.

Apparently Apple is already testing the upcoming operating system upgrade for iPhones; the iOS 5, which will be featured on the iPhone5 when it is released. The fifth generation iOS is being tested internally across all of Apple’s major products, including the iPhone 4, iPods and both iPads. There have also been no reports pointing at Apple having app developers tinkering with the new operating system as we definitely would’ve heard something about it by now; but definitely will when the time comes.

According to the same sources, Apple is also testing iOS 5 on the iPhone 3GS which is also interesting since it dissolves reports that Apple would no longer support internal upgrades for anything older than the iPhone 4.

We’ll definitely be getting MUCH more information about the iOS 5 upgrade (which will definitely shed some light on the what to expect from the iPhone 5) at Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference in June where they’ve advertised that they would be highlighting the future of Mac OS and iOS; a possibly hint at the final version of 10.7, Lion and iOS 5.

This all furthers the case that Apple will not be releasing the iPhone 5 until Fall 2011, since it would be far too late to be testing the operating system for an iPhone 5 that would released in about a month (on time with previous iPhone releases).

Now lets hope that some more interesting news pertaining to the iPhone 5 picks up in the coming days or else we’ll have to resort to making garbage rumours and news up like some other iPhone 5 websites ( you know who they are).

Apple Building Two iPhone 5 Models for Release This Fall

Apple is reportedly building two iPhone5 models for a scheduled fall release.

According to an employee of an Apple part supplier, there is reason to believe that the iPhone 5 will actually be two devices: a ‘standard’ and ‘pro’ model.

Previous rumors have said that the iPhone 5 would be a significant redesign of its predecessor, and we’ve also heard rumors that the iPhone 5 will end up being only a slight evolution of the iPhone 4.

Due to the extensive amount of NDAs our source had to sign to work with Apple, he could not give us very many details. He does believe that Apple is going to build two iPhone models, which he referred to as a ‘normal’ and a ‘pro’ version.

Our source says that Apple is ordering components of similar function, but some of them are the very best of what you can get right now.

While the rest of the ordered components are just the standard versions, Apple is also ordering better quality components of the same function. Our source says that both types of components wouldn’t go in one device together, which makes him believe Apple is up to something with a ‘pro’ version.

We believe our source is reliable regarding this information. On top of that, we have also heard from an inside source at Apple that the iPhone 5(s) will definitely not be released until Q2 of this year. Apple’s internal revenue forecast for the next business quarter is the lowest it’s ever been, which means no new iPhone(s) until at least August or Septembe

According to our inside source at Apple, the company is making plans for the next iPhone announcement in the fall after the “Back to School” season. The next iPhone announcement will take place in the exact same time frame as Apple’s music and iPod event has in the past.

This isn’t the first time that we’ve heard about a fall iPhone announcement, and we believe our source has only helped confirm that news.

Recent rumors of an iPhone 4S have suggested that the next generation iPhone will only be a slight redesign and focus more on internal hardware. We’ve heard that the next iPhone (whether it be two devices or one) will be a global device capable of running on all carriers.

Perhaps Apple will keep the ‘normal’ version of the iPhone 5 as a carrier-specific device, and introduce a global phone with upgraded specs as the ‘pro’ version.

Further Indication iPhone 5 Release will be Q4 2011

It’s a rumor which has been around since Apple officially announced the date for WWDC 2011, and now Reuters have added further fuel to the fire.  We’re talking about the next generation of iPhone not being released soon after the conference as has been the tradition, but in September instead.
Quoting a trio of individuals with ‘direct knowledge of the company’s supply chain’, the report says production of the iPhone5 won’t begin until July or August, leading to a September shipping date.This ties in with the previous rumors suggesting a Q4 release for the phone, which given Apple’s preference for short lead times indicated a late Q3/early Q4 announcement.  Why they’ve decided to extend the life of the iPhone 4 this time isn’t known, but it could be down to many things:

1. The White iPhone 4.  It’s still supposed to be on its way, don’t forget!
2. iOS 5.  Perhaps the new software isn’t quite ready?
3. Supply Problems.  Touchscreens, new camera lenses etc.
4. A change in Apple’s release structure across the board.

A September onwards release date should please a few people though, as anyone with an 18-month iPhone 4 contract will be a few steps closer to upgrading to the fifth model than expected!
Reuter’s sources also say the iPhone 5 won’t look all that different to the iPhone 4, something many have also suspected.  If the design doesn’t change, the good news is all those iPhone 4 cases won’t be useless; unlike any iPad 1 cases you may have…
Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference will take place between the 6th and 10th June 2011.
